Self pictures

I call them self-pictures and not self-portraits because they are not about portraying the person, but about the clothes, the attitude, the world, the story... However, the background is not always appropriate. Sometimes I have no other place but my home to shoot them.

The good thing about this is the communication between model and photographer is perfect: they both know what they want. The trouble is no one can tell the model "turn a little bit this way". You have to shoot and correct, and the same thing applies to the framing. By the way, this picture above was taken placing the camera on the most impossible surface imaginable.

However, sometimes this difficulties give beautiful imperfections as a result. This picture above is not the good one. It's taken too much from the side and the lollipop pendant is not visible enough. The good one is the one below. But I like this one better. I find it more poetic.

The Picturesque Truth

Find Waldo. This is real, cupcakes.

Encontrad a Wally. Esto es real, cielos.

Some Faerie Tale

It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside. I fell in love with this picture of Eugenio Recuenco's (above) months ago and was planning on posting it here... and then, just last week in photography class, we saw the other, by Tim Walker (below) with the same subject.
Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean, is this (Recuenco's) is the sweetest picture I've ever seen. I love the soft light, the blueish colours and the faerie tale it is about, especially because it's a faerie tale my generation doesn't seem to remember much, perhaps because there's no Disney film about it (giggles).

Cinderella

I caught these on a rainy night on my way home. It's magic. I mean, who in the world could have forgotten a shoe on a bench?
It may seem like it's not a fashion picture at all, but it's all about futility...

Here are some more shoots, so that you can see the different feelings it gives with different lights.

Darkness and movement

IriI love taking pictures in the dark. I hate flashes, and I love landscapes, wich means I need to keep real still to tale them correctly.

Just so you can get a sense of how hard it is:

Para que veáis lo que cuesta:

The first is taken with a mode meant for dailight pictures. The second is what I get with a long exposure. No sign of movement, right? Well, no tripod, no breathing! (Breathing is unimportant, muffins).

However, I do enjoy playing with movement. Check it out!

It's the optics, not the Megapixels! Love my Pentax. Muffins!

Laces for my Valentine

I've been taking a look at VS's collection for St. Valentine's Day. Here are a few images. I don't really like the photography. I find them too much photoshopped, the light is not natural and there are too many contrasts on the models' skin. But I love the outfits and the way they're posing.

Perfect Aberration

This time the battle is, as usual, gothick versus classic. And the time has come to say...

¡Odio esta foto!

I hate this picture!

Everyone comments on how perfect it is, but I find it unutterably horrible. It does have a merit (however, I don't think using a very short exposure camera has a greater merit than MY hand-held 3 second exposure night pictures. Got to hold my breath! Wait for them) but then...

The model's "moving" pose is SO artificial. What sort of woman leaps like that? If there's water on the floor, you just jump a bit and take a longest step, but you don't do the Mary Poppins.

And the framing... Yes, it's perfect, but it's terribly grotesque. If Avedon wanted movement, why would he choose simmetry? This absolut balance, this repose, this cleanness turning a moving woman into a stiff mannequin hung by invisible strings, only give us a rigid, hard picture with no liricism at all.

As Walpole would've said: "You need taste to appreciate Avedon, but you only want passions to feel Bourdin" (giggles).

This is definately NOT what Füssli, Wiertz or Delacroix would've done had they worked on photofilm instead of canvas.

Be gothick, romantic, baroque. Die hard!!

Poetry vs. Color

We are usually told that a picture composed mostly of warm colors seems nice and cozy, while cold colors create a distant and distressing atmosphere. Now I'd like you to take but a second to compare these two pictures.

Realmente me parece fea.

The first, by Teller, filled with yellow, is strange as can be. I really believe it to be ugly. The second, which, despite EA's Manic Panic pink hair and red hearts, has a general blueish tone, feels soft, nice and intimate.

Could we blame the light for being white and strong in Teller's and, although blue, soft in the other? I don't think so.

I believe this feeling to be due to the object of the picture rather than to the way it is portrayed. The second is filled with music, poetry, emotion, sensitivity and lots of D. The first is plagued with... emptyness and nothing.

So the matter here is the romanticism in the picture, the story which lies behind. The dramatical intensity may even render the toughest, most agressive crazy and suicidal pictures much more likeable than any meant-to-be glamorous, kitch, fun and lovely fashion magazine photos all filled with pink.

And if you only challenge, I bet there's many more pictures that will prove my point further.

Tea and muffins for all.
